Shame On Geocities! In a recent article I commented that Yahoo does very well at tracking down and eliminating users who are abusing their system. Oddly enough, Geocities (which is owned by Yahoo) is not doing nearly so well.In the past two weeks I have seen 13 emails come in very similar to the following:
You have a secret admirer Find out who below http://www.geocities.com/******/webcam.html
If you want further information from me directly, we can have a private meeting http://www.geocities.com/*****/webcam.html
Needless to say, these two sites mentioned in the spam were pornographic in nature.
Having learned from my experiences with Yahoo that they are willing to track down breaches of policy, even when the spam does not originate with them, I fired off the appropriate information to Geocities, thinking that they would deal with the offending websites.
Alas, they did not. It has now been two weeks, and each of the twenty-plus pornographic spamming sites still remain fully functional, and the spam continues to flow into the inbox. Each piece of spam has been forwarded to the Geocities abuse department, and each one has been ignored.
Geocities is apparently doing nothing, and has not bothered to comment on their lack of action.
As I said in the title of this article: SHAME ON GEOCITIES!
